Zcash Orchard exploit exposes supply chain risks

A critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool was discovered on May 29 by Shielded Labs researcher Taylor Hornby during a targeted security review. The flaw, embedded within the zero-knowledge proof circuit, could have allowed an attacker to create counterfeit ZEC. ZODL engineers confirmed the issue within hours and deployed an emergency fork to patch the protocol. However, the incident highlights a broader supply integrity gap: while the code fix addressed the immediate threat, the root cause—an AI-assisted development process that introduced the bug—remains unresolved.
